ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
ISDN is a multichannel, full duplex, synchronous, integrated, end-to-end
digital network. By maximizing the transmission capabilities of existing
twisted pair copper wire, ISDN provides users with dialable access of
speeds up to128Kbps. (over 4 times faster than an analog phone line!)
ISDN offers two B channels for voice, circuit-switched and packet
switcheddata plus one D channel for packet switched data and signaling.
Each B channel operates at 56/64kbps and can carry voice, data, and/or
video simultaneously. The D channel operates at 16Kbps and carries call
setup for the network, but can also carry user data transmissions. The 2 B
channels may be combined for a transmission speed of 128Kbps.
This means that a single ISDN line can support as many as three separate
"conversations" at the same time, through the same line. For example, an
end user could carry on a voice conversation and send a fax on the two B
channels and have a 3rd packet-switched data call on the D channel.
A single ISDN line can support up to 8 devices and as many as 64 separate
telephone numbers. (This being dependent on the capabilities of your local
Telcol central office switch) For example, a single ISDN line could
support a fax, computer, a telephone or a combination of these with each
device answering to several different phone numbers.
